Makeup Musts

1. Double up on bronzer. Use your fingertips to apply a light coat of liquid bronzer all over your face, then apply a light second coat (of the same bronzer) only along the jawline, blending it down the neck and under the cheekbones, says Gafni. Since a darker color makes these areas recede, it’s a great way to sculpt instant cheekbones.

2. Make your eyes pop. The bigger your eyes look, the more petite your face seems. Apply a neutral shimmer to the inner corners of the eyes. Next glide a dark brown, gray or black pencil liner across the entire upper lash line. Skip liner on the bottom lash line; it’ll make your eyes look smaller. Curl eyelashes and apply two coats of volumizing black mascara.

3. Fill in your brows. “If you have a full face, thickening your eyebrows will make them take up more space and will slim your face,” says Gafni. The Rx for skimpy brows: Use a brow pencil or shadow one shade lighter than your eyebrow color to pencil in the brows all the way to the end of the brow line.

4. Drizzle oil on your legs. Get slim, sexy gams by blending a thin line of body oil or highlighting cream right down the center of the front of your legs. Highlighting this bony part plays up the vertical line and makes your whole leg look lithe.

5. Elongate short fingers. This nail polish tip from Redbook‘s beauty director, Cheryl Kramer, will make your fingers and nails appear longer: Paint your favorite shade down the center of the nail and leave a little space on either side.

6. Add some shimmer. Strategically apply a translucent shimmer powder or cream with your fingertips along your cheekbones and collarbone. Highlighting bone structure reflects light, making it more noticeable (thus making you look thinner).

7. Go faux tanning. It’s not your imagination: You do look slimmer after a week at the beach. So a few hours before going out, exfoliate with a body scrub, then smooth on a self-tanner. Or take a cue from stars like Jessica Simpson, who almost always gets a spray-tan treatment before big events.

Hot Hairstyles

8. Pick the right part. Opt for a side part — a center part makes your face look round. A good rule of thumb to find the most flattering, face-slimming part: Use the arch of your eyebrow as a guide. Start the part above the arch and go back from there in a straight line.

9. Skip bangs. Or sweep them to the side if you have a round or square face. A bare forehead lengthens and slims the face.

10. Pull your hair back. If your neck is on the short side, pulling hair up off your neck and shoulders makes the neck look longer and upper body appear thinner.

11. Add volume. Hair that lies too flat on the head makes a full face appear even bigger. A full or wavy style, on the other hand, minimizes a larger face.

12. Do an updo. Building extra height at the crown of your head narrows round features and makes your face seem thinner. For the simplest ‘do ever, twist hair into a high knot and fasten with a pretty barrette.

Dress-Slim Secrets

13. Pick one hue. Dressing head-to-toe in a single dark color, like navy or black, is the single best way to look like you’ve lost 10 pounds.

14. Skip large patterns. Smaller patterns fool the eye and make for a more delicate look. And whatever you do, don’t wear patterns on top and bottom — that’ll add 10 pounds.

15. Slip on the right length skirt. Stick to just-above-the-knee skirts that play off knees and elongate legs. Avoid a midcalf skirt, which draws attention to the widest part of your legs, making them look heavier.

16. Ditch shorts. They’re almost never flattering. Capris, on the other hand, are surprisingly slimming, especially if you stick to dark denim or black and wear ones that aren’t too short or too long. They should end at the least-wide part of your calves, ideally a few inches above the ankle.

17. Wear a sexy tee. V-neck and deep scoop-neck tees elongate the neck and make the torso appear longer by showing off your collarbone.

18. Go vertical. Thin vertical stripes on anything — pants, shirts, skirts, dresses — create the illusion of a longer, leaner body.

19. Slim down with color. Hot summer hues like pink and yellow catch the eye and are good for body parts you want to play up. Pair them with black, brown or navy — dark colors recede and are best for areas that you’d like to draw the eye away from.

20. Pull out that A-line dress. A gently flared A-line cut is universally flattering and hides large hips.

21. Wear fitted jackets. “Any jacket can add bulk to your frame if it’s not tailored and well fitted,” says Saboura. Choose jackets that taper at your waist and make it look smaller. “Avoid jackets that have a square shape — they can make you look boxy,” he says.

22. Try an empire. This superhigh waistline hugs your ribs, highlighting the chest. However, big-busted women should avoid empire waists, because a large chest doesn’t fit into this cut correctly, says Saboura.

23. Bring on the buttons. Look for a dress with buttons from neckline to hem. The vertical line is visually slimming. (Note: Fitted zip tops are flattering for the same reason.)

24. Look for pockets. Got hips? “Diagonal slash pockets (which look like slits) on pants can work as a great diversion and camouflage saddlebags,” says Saboura. Pants without pockets are also a good way to slim down and create a clean line.

25. Pick the perfect jeans. Look for a pair that sits lower on your waist — jeans that sit high on the waist can make your stomach, butt and hips look bigger, says Saboura. And go for boot cut — the slight flare fits over sandals and will give you longer, lankier legs.

26. Keep pants long. Here’s a sneaky way to stretch out your legs: Wear your pants on the longer side, so they break over the middle of the foot.

27. Put on a sexy cover-up. A three-quarter-length jacket is a celeb favorite and is perfect for covering up a cocktail dress or pairing with skinny pants on a cool summer night, says Saboura. The style — which falls a few inches above the knee and typically has a slight A-line flare — slims hips and thighs.

Body Shapers

28. Get nude. Want to look completely sleek? Stick to flesh-colored undergarments. The right shade of nude is your best friend because the color doesn’t break up the body’s long line.

29. Go footless. With your panty hose, that is. Spanx body-shaping, footless panty hose, a favorite of Oprah’s, keep your legs and tummy looking sleek under formfitting pants or capris while your tootsies go bare in sandals.

30. Say good-bye to cellulite. Try cellulite-control panty hose. The fabric weaves on a diagonal and pulls your leg in, camouflaging dimpled skin.

31. Buy the right size bra. Wanna subtract inches? Get pro-fitted for the perfect bra for your shape. Here’s why: With the right bra you’ll suddenly look proportional and your clothes will drape over your breasts, says Trent. If the bra is too small, it will create bumps and rolls, and if it’s too large, the excess fabric adds inches.

32. Tank up. If you’re large on top, buy a tank top with a built-in underwire bra to wear as a layer. It smoothes and shapes a large chest.

33. Get a sexy bra. A demi-bra lifts breasts way up and will take the focus off a round tummy, says Trent.

34. Pick the right panties. Camouflage bumps and bulges with modern control-top panties (look for a brand made with nylon and spandex).

Flattering Finishing Touches

35. Sport three-inch heels. Why do five-foot-four stars like Sarah Jessica Parker and five-foot-ten ones like Nicole Kidman both sport sky-high heels or platform shoes on the red carpet? “High heels give you a thinner profile and silhouette and more height,” says Trent. And they force you to have good posture — an instant slimmer, says Saboura.

36. Avoid ankle-strap sandals. “The strap around your ankle will draw a line across the bottom of your leg, which visually cuts the leg at the strap, making it look shorter,” says Saboura. The more of your leg and the top of your foot you show, the longer your leg line will appear.

37. Pick a well-proportioned purse. “A purse shouldn’t compete with your body,” says Saboura. It will just add more bulk. Petite women look sexiest with smaller bags, while large women look best with medium-size purses. Bags that resemble a bowling bag or a doctor’s satchel make any body look bigger by adding bulk.

38. Score face-slimming shades. If your face is on the full side, wide rectangular-frame sunglasses give you a sleeker look.

39. Fasten your belt. A thin white belt, which is hot this summer, gives you a wow waistline. Avoid a wide belt, which visually cuts the body in half.

40. Think long jewelry. Long, skinny earrings and sleek pendant necklaces elongate and slim the face and body with their vertical lines.

41. Wear bangles. Skinny bangles or a bracelet-style watch make your arms look thinner by creating space around your wrist, which fools the eye, says Saboura. Tight watches and bracelets that hug your wrists can make them look like sausages.

Bloat Busters

42. Pass on the pretzels. Salty food promotes fluid retention. Skip snacks like pretzels, potato chips and salted nuts. Also avoid processed foods that are high in sodium, like soup, ketchup, mustard and salad dressing. Look for products with less than 50 mg of sodium per serving.

43. Cut out starchy carbs. How do celebs like Jennifer Aniston look so hot in their skin-tight red-carpet gowns? They skip carbs the day of the ceremony. Starchy carbs like pasta, rice and bread absorb water, leaving you bloated.

44. Eat asparagus. Here’s another star secret: “Asparagus is the MVP diuretic,” says Kirsch. “It really helps get excess fluid out of the body, which will make you slimmer.” For lunch, Kirsch recommends that his clients eat a spinach salad with grilled chicken, asparagus and balsamic vinegar.

45. Chomp on celery. Since it’s 70 percent water, celery helps flush excess fluid out of the body, says Kirsch.

46. Have a banana. Fruits like banana and cantaloupe, which are high in potassium, help regulate the fluid balance in your body, which can counteract bloating.

47. Can the soda. Want a flat belly? Skip soda. Carbonated beverages create bubbles in the stomach, making your belly expand.

48. Avoid alcohol. Imbibing before you go out might not be a great idea if you want to look thin. The alcohol’s sugar will add instant bloat, as will the bubbles (in champagne, tonic or soda).

49. Pick up some parsley. And don’t just use it to decorate your plate. It’s a mild diuretic that will naturally help the body flush out excess water. Add some to your salad or steamed veggies.

Fitness Fixes

50. Perfect your posture. Good posture is slimming. Pull your shoulders back (instead of rolling them forward) and your shoulder blades together. This move will also flatten out poochy abs.

51. Pump iron. Grab a set of five- or eight-pound dumbbells: A few sets of chest presses, biceps curls and triceps kickbacks before you go out will pump blood into your arm muscles, making them appear more toned.

52. Sweat it off. Pound the pavement for 45 minutes. Exercising forces fluids into the bloodstream, where they are released through perspiration. Try exercises that you can do anywhere and will also work several body parts, like jogging or fast-paced walking.
